2022 PHF All-Star Showcase Uses Honorary Coaches

Meghan Chayka, Melody Davidson and Sami Jo Small join the Showcase on January 29 in Toronto

The Premier Hockey Federation 2022 All-Star Showcase on Saturday January 29 in Toronto will feature three prominent Canadian women as bench chiefs. Three-time Olympian Sami Jo Small, former Canada Hockey coach Melody Davidson and hockey data specialist Meghan Chayka will each lead one of three competing teams next month.

Chayka, co-founder / CEO of hockey analytics and data firm Stathletes, has a history with NWHL that has spilled over to PHF. Stathletes provides cutting-edge hockey information in over 22 leagues around the world, including the PHF. She is also Data Scientist in Residence at the Rotman School of Management at the University of Toronto. Chayka was recognized by The Hockey News as one of the Top 100 People of Power and Influence in Hockey and as the Best Young Entrepreneur by the Ontario Chamber of Commerce.

“I am very honored to be the coach at this event,” said Chayka. “The chance to celebrate Toronto’s best players is at the top of my calendar in January. I love the new format and can’t wait to see all the players on the bench. I’m really excited to try to win the tournament and have a lot of fun.

Davidson has served as the head coach, assistant coach, general manager and head scout of Canada’s National Women’s Teams in 36 different events, collecting a medal in each case. She helped Canada win four consecutive gold medals at the Olympic Winter Games as an assistant coach in 2002, then as head coach in 2006 and 2010, and general manager in 2014. She also has won five gold medals at the IIHF World Women’s Championship and 10 gold medals at the 4 Nations Cup. Davidson has been inducted into the Canadian Olympic Hall of Fame twice, first in 2011 as a coach and again in 2019 as a member of the 2010 Olympic team.

“I can’t wait to participate in the PHF All-Star Showcase and have the opportunity to come back behind the bench with some of the best professional female hockey players in North America,” said Davidson. “It’s very exciting to have this special event in Canada, and I’m proud to support the PHF and the athletes.

Female hockey fans in Toronto should know Small. The Olympian won professional championships with the Toronto Eros (2003 and 2004), a title in 2008 with the Mississauga Chiefs and a Clarkson Cup in 2014 with the Toronto Furies. The co-founder of the LCHF was also the general manager of the Furies after the end of her playing career.

“It is a tremendous honor to be chosen as the ‘Honorary’ Coach for the PHF All-Star Showcase in Toronto,” said Small. “I am grateful to be a part of such a great celebration of hockey and a showcase of professional talent, and to have the opportunity to coach alongside the amazing minds of hockey, Mel Davidson and Meghan Chayka.”

Coaches will be paired with one of three PHF All-Star Captains – Shiann Darkangelo of the Toronto Six, Jillian Dempsey of the Boston Pride and Allie Thunstrom of the Minnesota Whitecaps – closer to the event. Darkangelo, Dempsey, and Thunstrom were each selected by one player vote.

Thirty other All-Star participants will be selected by the PHF coaches and announced in the coming days. A fan vote to choose three additional skaters and a goalie. A virtual draft will be conducted in January for the selection of the list.

Fans can watch the PHF All-Star Showcase 2022 exclusively on ESPN + in the United States, on TSN and TSN Direct in Canada, and through the ESPN International distribution network.
