When to watch artistic swimming during the Paris 2024 Olympics
Artistic swimming is a unique sport on the Olympic program that combines aquatic acrobatics and music. At the Olympic Games, the sport consists of two events: one in pairs and another in teams of eight athletes. Each event is made up of two performances which include a free routine and a technical routine. A panel of judges grade the athletes based on their execution, timing, degree of difficulty, use of music and choreography. Athletes competing in Artistic Swimming must be flexible and maintain strong attention to detail and coordination in order to perform the routines successfully.
Before artistic swimming became part of the Olympic program, it was dominated by men. Over time however, artistic swimming has become widely associated with women. The sport became an Olympic discipline at the Games in Los Angeles in 1984. Artistic swimming and rhythmic gymnastics are both Olympic sports reserved for women.
North American countries, particularly the United States and Canada, dominated artistic swimming on the Olympic stage early on as the two collected 18 medals combined. Russia have since become competitive, racking up 18 medals since the Sydney Games in 2000. The United States narrowly missed qualifying for the team event at the 2020 Tokyo Games, but managed to qualify duet test. Team USA will be looking to qualify for the team and duet events in Paris in 2024.
Artistic swimming will take place at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games from August 5-10.
