Shillong: Assam continued to retain the lead in the overall medal standings at the 2nd North East Olympic Games 2022 as the action on day three ended.
Assam have so far amassed 17 gold, 11 silver and 9 bronze, putting them ahead of 2018 overall champions Manipur, who currently have 11 gold, 12 silver and 13 bronze.
Arunachal Pradesh is third with 7 gold, 6 silver and 4 bronze, and Mizoram fourth with 4 gold, 4 silver and 8 bronze.
Next is host Meghalaya, who have 1 gold, 5 silver and 9 bronze. Nagaland also has 1 gold but is behind Meghalaya as they have 0 silver and 4 bronze.
Sikkim ranks seventh with 3 silver and 8 bronze medals, followed by Tripura, which has 8 bronze medals.
Assam’s rich harvest of gold medals is due to the performances of its swimmers at the Crinoline pool. In addition to their six golds on Friday, yesterday’s Assam swimming champions were Angshuman Kashyap (men’s 100m breaststroke), Disha Gogoi (women’s 100m breaststroke), Darshita Baruah (women’s 50m backstroke), Jananjoy Jyoti Hazarika ( men’s 100m butterfly), the men’s 4x50m medley relay and the women’s 4x50m medley relay.
The only swimming gold not won by them was won by Sarungbam Athouba Meitei of Manipur in the men’s 50m backstroke.
