Behind the scenes at the World Games headquarters

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) – Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin and 2022 World Games CEO Nick Sellers were invited to the White House on Wednesday to highlight Birmingham and the 10-day event starting here on July 7.

With opening ceremonies about eight weeks away, CBS 42 has been hanging out with vendors who have agreed to take our camera backstage.

With Sellers leading a team to deliver something Birmingham has never seen before, the question arises, what time does Sellers alarm go off in the morning?

leading a team to achieve something Birmingham has never seen.. i had to ask.. what time does his alarm go off in the morning?

“Usually it’s around 4 a.m. now. There are so many things going through my mind every day,” Sellers said from a street-side patio across from Protection Stadium, where much of the festivities and competition will take place.

“I rarely set an alarm. I get up and I’m on my feet, ”he continued.

Then it’s off to the races.

We meet vendors in the lobby of the 2022 World Games headquarters in downtown Birmingham, where much of the planning takes place on a daily basis.

“There are so many parts and moving parts in all of this. There really are, ”he explains.

“We all hit our milestones around July 7,” he continued.

July 7 is when the games begin.

3,600 athletes from over 100 countries will be in town to compete in 34 different sports.

The event will put Birmingham firmly on the international stage.

“I’ll tell you, it’s a pretty special time to be living in Birmingham, Alabama. You can feel the energy. It’s really palpable what’s going on in our city. People are really coming together and it’s an opportunity for us who live in the city to help introduce this new Birmingham to the world,” Sellers said.

He and his team manage all aspects of the games from marketing, ticketing, travel and board, broadcast, volunteers, language services and the venues where the competitions will take place for 10 days.

“We are going to build an 8-lane bowling alley in the BJCC for the world television bowling gold medal round. Billiards will be here at the Sheridan Ballroom. There is a sport called bowling. dancesport and I had no idea how popular this dancesport was,” he said.

Athletes train year round and will be here for the opportunity to chase gold.

Here to watch it happen there will be fans, world dignitaries, even the President of the International Olympic Committee will be in town for what will be the first major international multi-sport event with a full fan experience coming out of the pandemic. .

“It’s really kind of a call to the world right now that things can get better, that we can come together and that nothing brings the world together more than sports and music,” Sellers said.

Security will be enhanced.

Sellers explained that it will be like what you see in a national championship football game or an SEC championship football game.

“This is the highest security clearance for the federal government. That means the Secret Service, FBI, Homeland Security are all working with Birmingham Police, Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department, all the different municipalities. That will suffice to say that we are a very safe event for families,” he said.

As for what he has planned after the World Games are over, Sellers said a trip to Italy with his wife has already been booked.

“My wife and I will celebrate our 25th anniversary on July 12, right in the middle of the World Games. She is volunteering so she will be working at a location in town and I will be moving from place to place myself, but we have already planned our trip when this is over,” he said.
