The Walkley Foundation withholds review of the Channel Nine Story Prize on Andrew Laming

A review of the legitimacy of a Walkley Prize awarded to Channel Nine for a report that was later discredited has been completed, but the findings are unlikely to be released before the awards foundation holds its annual gala this week, reports the australian Sophie Elsworth.

On March 21, 2021, 9News Queensland aired a report which claimed then MP Andre Laming took an inappropriate “upskirting” photo of a female worker as she stacked a bar fridge.

Dr Laming was questioned by police over the alleged incident – he denied any wrongdoing and no charges were brought.

At the 2021 Walkley Awards (the ceremony took place in February this year, due to Covid postponements), Nine Journalists Pierre Fégan and Rebeka Powell won the television/video reporting category for their entry titled “The Andrew Laming Investigation” in relation to his alleged misconduct.

By the time the two journalists received the award, their reporting was already the subject of a libel suit by Laming.

Twitter Blue will ‘probably’ return late next week, says Musk

Twitter Blue ‘will likely return at the end of next week’, billionaire owner Elon Musk said in a tweet on Saturday, Reuters reports.

On Friday, Twitter suspended its recently announced $8 blue check subscription service on Friday as fake accounts spiked.

The coveted blue tick was previously reserved for verified accounts of politicians, celebrities, journalists, and other public figures. But a subscription option, open to anyone willing to pay, was rolled out earlier this week to help Twitter boost revenue as Musk battles to retain advertisers.

Several users reported on Friday that the new subscription option for the blue verification tick had disappeared, while a source told Reuters that the offer had been abandoned.

Felgate teams up with the soccer champion jimmy bartel to spearhead the 3AW breakfast show during the September radio listening break.

Streaming services come to the rescue of local TV series

Although the end of Neighbors after nearly 37 years on Channel 10, it has become even harder to find Australian dramas on commercial television, the country’s pay-TV and streaming services have stepped in to become the dominant force in the production of Australian scripted dramas, reports Nine Publishing’s Edmund Tadros.

The big jump in pay-TV and subscription streaming service spending on Australian drama – nearly quadrupling to $445m in fiscal 2022 – came as the government considers whether to force international streamers to allocate a certain amount of money to local content.

Unlike free-to-air broadcasters and pay-TV operators, international streaming services like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and Disney+ aren’t required to produce local shows.

The change will be visible on Tuesday when Foxtel launches the new season of Righta drama starring Tim Minchinwhile Stan, owned by Nine, will release Poker facea film directed and starring Russell CroweNovember 22.

Cricket Australia eyes broadcast rights deal before Christmas

Cricket Australia will this week seek to urgently advance discussions with potential broadcast partners for the sport amid continued nervousness from the networks over the value of the struggling Big Bash League, reports the australian James Madden.

Seven, Nine, Network 10 and its Paramount+ streaming service and Foxtel each submitted bids this month for different cricket rights packages, but The Australian was told CA was “disappointed” with the initial bids and asked broadcasters to make second-round bids this week.

Seven and Nine are understood to have only launched for testing rights – each offering just north of around $50 million a year for the five-day format, according to industry sources – while Ten/ Paramount+ and Foxtel are said to be interested in the “all cricket” option, which would include rights to Tests, One-Day Internationals and T20s in Australia, as well as domestic T20 competitions – the BBL and WBBL.

The existing six-year, $1.18 billion deal, which is currently split between Seven and Foxtel, still has two years to run, although the Kerry Stokes-The controlled network is still hoping to escape the final year of its contract, following its nasty fallout with CA over scheduling and player availability issues, mostly related to the BBL.

Olympic bosses arrive to negotiate Games broadcast deal

International Olympic Committee (IOC) decision-makers will spend two days in Sydney this week meeting with the country’s biggest commercial television networks on the broadcast of the next group of events, including the Brisbane 2032 Games, reports Nine Publishing’s Zoe Samios.

Media sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said executives from Nine Entertainment Co, Seven West Media and Paramount had planned to meet with two key IOC stakeholders. The eventual deal would include the 2024 Paris Olympics, the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics and the 2032 Brisbane Olympics, as well as the Winter Olympics during this period.

Nine, Seven and Paramount plan to host the executives, including Anne-Sophie Voumard, president of broadcast rights and media rights for the IOC’s television and marketing services, for lunch or dinner, the sources said, as well as making presentations. No binding or non-binding offers for the rights are expected to be made this week. Nine, Seven and Paramount declined to comment.
