China’s National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA) said on Wednesday it will launch special campaigns to promote intellectual property protection during the upcoming 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing.
At a press conference, CNIPA announced its intention to monitor the use of symbols, designs and markings for the 2022 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games in accordance with Chinese laws. The administration plans to crack down on illegal merchants and e-commerce platforms involved in the production and sale of items that violate intellectual property rights.
The CNIPA this year led a rectification campaign targeting malicious registration of trademarks and intellectual property. It reported four batches of cases totaling 815,000 involving anomalous intellectual property registrations, and blocked 93.1% of the registrations in the first three batches.
The number of malicious trademark registration cases inspected stands at 376,000 so far in 2021, and nearly 200 unlicensed registration agencies have been fined over 10 million yuan (1.57 million dollars), CNIPA said.
CNIPA noted that the value of new intellectual property and trademarks in the first 10 months of this year reached 240.77 billion yuan, increasing by 50.6% year-on-year and exceeding the total. in 2020.
China is emerging as a major exporter of intellectual property. According to CNIPA data, the value of China’s intellectual property exports and imports in the first three quarters of 2021 reached nearly 280 billion yuan, with exports growing 27 percent year-on-year.
In the 2021 Global Innovation Index, China’s ranking jumped to a record 12th place, leading middle-income economies.
