David L. Ploof | News, Sports, Jobs

David L. Ploof, 71, of Lake Placid, died Friday, August 26, 2022 at Adirondack Health in Saranac Lake. He was born on March 15, 1951 to Edward and Lenore Ploof of St. Regis Falls.

David has spent most of his life in Lake Placid and loved everything about the community. He worked for the Lake Placid Olympic Committee in the sales department from 1978 to 1980. He was a dedicated volunteer at several local running and cross-country skiing events. His time in the restaurant industry spanned many years. He took great pride in his work and was known for his attention to detail and organization. It was because of these qualities that his professional family considered him “The goat”

David was an avid runner, logging over 37 years of racing without missing a day. He was a founding member of the Lake Placid Road Runners. He participated in many running races, including the 100th edition of the Boston Marathon. His best marathon time was around 2 hours and 53 minutes. David spent his winters cross-country skiing wherever he could find enough snow. One of his favorite winter destinations was the Cascade XC ski center. He was a regular participant in the annual Lake Placid Loppet Ski Race. His close friends, who knew him as “Splash”, fondly remembers an outing where he (accidentally) skied down Mount Marcy. Other hobbies David enjoyed included bicycling, reading, cheering on the Boston Red Sox, and tackling The New York Times Sunday crossword. He was also a regular blood donor for several years. Everyone who knew David knew Molly. He was incredibly proud of her, and he shared that with those around him.

He is survived by his beloved daughter Molly Ploof, her fiancé Michael Sapone, brothers Denis Ploof and Frank Ploof and many lifelong friends.

David’s funeral mass will begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday, October 1, 2022 at St. Agnes Church in Lake Placid. Reverend John Yonkovig will officiate. A celebration of life will follow at High Peaks Resort.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in David’s name to a local charity or organization of his choice. MB Clark Funeral Home, Inc. in Lake Placid is responsible for arrangements. Please visit www.mbclarkfuneralhome.com to share a memory or leave condolences for David’s family and friends.
