Disabled Veterans Learn Adaptive Golf in Iowa City

A lot of golf news has been making waves in Iowa over the past few weeks and here’s another shining example of the game bringing people together. More than 400 VA and community volunteers joined to help with this year’s Rehabilitation Golf Program, to help veterans with disabilities learn the game of golf.

The host site for the program this year is the Riverside Hotel and Golf Resort, where golf takes place at various golf courses in Iowa City, according to Veterans Golf Clinic. This is a week-long program that gives veterans who may have specific life-altering disabilities the chance to learn how to play adaptive golf. These injuries can range from traumatic brain injuries to amputations and spinal cord injuries, to name a few.

According Veterans Golf Clinicthis week-long event was created to “to give veterans the opportunity to learn new skills, build self-esteem, and increase brotherhood and camaraderie among participants.”

This program is attended by veterans from across the country and gives them the chance to learn the game of golf, and perhaps most importantly…to visit some of their friends. US VA Secretary Denis McDonough said KCRGsome veterans have mentioned that they only started playing golf through this program and that it is fun to make new friends.

Navy veteran Richard Pint said KCRG

It’s a good event to hang out, get some exercise and meet some good people. It’s just fun and friendly. It helps me maintain my golf game a bit.

Yesterday we learned that a state-of-the-art driving range called PinSeekers, which includes 56 driving range suites as well as a bar and restaurant, will be coming to Iowa next summer.

We also learned that the LaPorte City Golf Club, which had been slated to close, was saved by the Iowans and others from the United States. Add to that, about 14 days ago, an Iowa high school freshman hit a 1 in 6 million golf shot during his first high school tournament.

It’s like every day we read terrible and scary things in the news. It was great to see a game I love to play be a shining beacon and make headlines for reasons that would make you smile.
