ELLSWORTH, Maine – The Down East Family YMCA announced plans to launch an inclusive program for children with developmental disabilities, and the Y is partnering with Maine Special Olympics to succeed.
The program should allow children with disabilities to access activities such as art, music, basketball and other sports, according to Elizabeth Stanley, director of unique programming at the Y.
“It’s just going to give these kids a chance to hang out, socialize and have fun,” Stanley told NEWS CENTER Maine.
Stanley will be the leader of this new program and has a personal connection with him.
“My youngest daughter, Abby, was diagnosed with autism, and I’ve seen her struggle over the years,” Stanley explained. “She was dragged into all of her sisters’ events. She just couldn’t have the same experience and wanted it. Just looking around trying to find things for her to do is very limiting.
The program is expected to start in early November. For more information on the program, you can visit the Down East Family YMCA website by clicking on here.
