MANILA, Philippines — Filipino boxers are expected to make winning the Hangzhou 2023 Asian Games a priority after the International Olympic Committee named it one of several gateways to the Paris 2024 Olympics.

“The IOC has designated five continental games as one of the three qualifiers for Paris 2024,” Philippine Olympic Committee President Abraham Tolentino said on Friday. “After these continental championships, the IOC has also organized two other world qualifications in 2024.”

The IOC detailed its plans for Paris 2024 boxing in a memo sent to the Russian president of the International Boxing Association, Umar Kremlev, and released to national Olympic committees on Thursday, the same day the organization’s executive committee s gathered at Olympic House in Lausanne.

IOC Director General Christophe De Kepper and Ethics and Compliance Office Chief Pa?querette Girard Zappelli signed the memo.

The mayor of the city of Tagaytay said the other routes to the quadrennial event are the Pan American Games (Santiago, Chile), the European Games (Krakow, Poland), the Pacific Games (Honiara, Solomon Islands) and the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa next year. .

That’s apart from the two world qualifiers in 2024.

“With three qualifiers, we have high hopes of being able to send more boxers to Paris,” Tolentino said.

Boxing is one of the two sports that offered medals to the country at the Tokyo Olympics, thanks to a pair of silver by Nesthy Petecio and Carlo Paalam and a bronze by Eumir Felix Marcial.

The other discipline was weightlifting thanks to Hidilyn Diaz, who gave the country its Olympic gold medal.
