Global Science Forum Media Grant Program 2022 ($25,000 grant)

Deadline: September 30, 2022

Applications are open for the Global Science Forum Media Grant Scheme 2022. Established by the Department of Science and Technology (DST) of the Government of South Africa, the South African Science Forum (SFSA) Annual Meeting is the largest pan-African general science gathering dedicated to scientific research and innovation.

The two-and-a-half-day program held each December in Pretoria brings together over 3,500 participants for discussions and debates in plenary sessions, panel discussions and interactive discussions.

The Media Grants Program

One of the main objectives of WSF2022 is to support the profession of science journalism in these rather difficult economic times. University courses in science journalism and mentorship programs run by media volunteers are increasingly rare. Particularly in the ‘Global South’, where issues of great pride and importance to local, national and regional populations are too often a ‘hard sell’ in more international media markets, the theme of WSF2022 of “Science for Social Justice” strikes a certain chord.

The Office of the Chief Scientist of Quebec, Professor Rémi Quirion has offered to help. Thanks to a grant from the Fonds de Recherche du Québec, the objective is to raise awareness of the WSF2022 as an unparalleled platform where print and broadcast journalists, editors, bloggers and social media can rub shoulders with speakers and delegates. to discuss and report on the latest scientific, political and civil society developments.

  • A grant of US$25,000 is awarded exclusively for media flights. DST will cover all accommodation costs.

  • Any journalist interested in science, regardless of gender, age, nationality, place of residence and media (newspaper, radio, television, web) is invited to apply.
  • Media accreditation will be required, along with proof of recent work and an intent or commission to cover the conference program.
  • Applicants will also be asked to provide a few simple lines about what the conference theme “science for social justice” might mean to them. As a legacy of WSF2022, it is hoped that social justice can also better inform and become more pervasive in science coverage around the world.

Selection criteria

The selection of candidates will be global and based on:

  • The candidate’s CV and proof of recent work;
  • Statement of motivation and interest in the conference program; &
  • Impact of the proposed medium.
