The Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe is supporting an effort to make that happen, announcing Tuesday that they are donating US$100,000 to help the Haudenosaunee Nationals compete internationally and with the ultimate goal of playing in the Olympics in six years. in Los Angeles.

The men’s Nationals team at the just-concluded World Games in Birmingham, Alabama earned a fifth-place finish, and the women’s team finished seventh overall.

The SRMT Tribal Council said in its announcement that “more than 70 countries compete in the World Lacrosse Championships every four years. Unlike other countries that have thousands of players, the Haudenosaunee Nationals only have a few hundred, so ranking them among the best in the world is an accomplishment we should all be proud to support.

Over the past few months, the Nationals have reached out and shared their desire to compete in the Los Angeles Olympics in 2028, hoping to use the global event to share the game’s true meaning for peace, friendship and healing with the world.

Outreach included community meetings and presentations provided by Lorraine White (Mohawk), Haudenosaunee National Board Member, and Executive Director Leo Nolan (Mohawk).

To compete in the Olympics, the Haudenosaunee Nationals must obtain the necessary financial support, as well as a place in a world lacrosse championship. The men’s team will have another opportunity to qualify for the 2022 Men’s U-21 World Lacrosse Championship in Limerick, Ireland, to be held in August.
