LA 2028 Olympics first sports list released, no longer possible

Skateboarding, surfing and sport climbing, which made their Olympic debut in Tokyo, are expected to remain on the program until the 2028 Games in Los Angeles.

The IOC Executive Board on Thursday announced the sports recommended for the initial Los Angeles Games program, which will be confirmed by IOC members in February, listing 28 international federations.

For now, long-standing Olympic sports boxing, weightlifting and modern pentathlon are not on the agenda for 2028, but there is a path for their inclusion. All three are on the 2024 Olympic program.

Boxing and weightlifting have been contested at every Olympic Games since 1920. Modern pentathlon has been featured at every Olympic Games since 1912.

President of the IOC Thomas Bach said the international federations of the three sports must resolve separate issues to the satisfaction of the IOC Executive Board. If this is the case, they can be added to the 2028 Olympic program from 2023.

The International Boxing Association (AIBA) must respond to concerns “about its governance, financial transparency and sustainability and the integrity of its arbitration and adjudication processes,” Bach said.

In June 2019, the IOC deprived AIBA of its Olympic recognition following a report by a commission of inquiry into finance, governance, arbitration and adjudication. An investigation later revealed that the 2016 Olympic medal fights had been rigged by “complicit and compliant” referees and judges.

Bach said the International Weightlifting Federation must make the transition “to compliance and effective culture change.” More specifically, it must tackle the historic doping problems of sport and “ensure the integrity, robustness and full independence of its anti-doping program”.

More than 60 weightlifters who competed between the 2008 and 2012 Olympics went on to fail drug tests or retests of old samples, including more than 30 original medalists.

Modern pentathlon is in a very different situation. His federation must determine a replacement for riding as one of its five disciplines.

“They must demonstrate a significant reduction in costs and complexity and improvements in the areas of safety, accessibility, universality, appeal to young people and the general public,” Bach said.

Last month, the International Modern Pentathlon Union (UIPM) said horse riding would be phased out to increase the chances of retaining the modern pentathlon’s place at the Olympics. A UIPM commission recommended that equestrianism be replaced by a discipline to be determined which “reinforces the popularity and credibility of the modern pentathlon, while preserving its status as the ultimate sporting physical and mental challenge”.

In addition, the place of equestrian sport in the Olympic Games is not in danger.

LA 2028 may also offer to add sports only for its edition of the Games. This is how skateboarding, surfing and sport climbing first came to the Olympics in Tokyo, and now all three are expected to be held at three back-to-back Olympics.

Baseball and softball, which were added for Tokyo at the request of organizers after being banned from the Olympics after 2008, will not be on the Paris 2024 schedule but hope to return for LA 2028.

“As we review other sports recommendations, we will continue to focus on sports relevant to Los Angeles, providing an incredible experience for fans and contributing to the success of the Games,” President of LA 2028. Casey wasserman said in a press release. “We want to build on tradition while moving the Olympic Games forward. “
