There are one-design classes, such as the Star and the Finn, which can transition when their boat is no longer in use at the Olympics. Their history, popularity and basic element can carry on the torch. But for the Class 470, their status seems less certain.

While the 470 class has nearly 60 years of history, its commitment to Olympic-level competition puts a lot of eggs in one basket.

Excessive kinetics are now the norm, requiring elite physical form for peak performance. And now the class will have their boat used in the new Mixed Two Person Dinghy event for Paris 2024, impacting their current participation in the men’s and women’s divisions.

However, Class 470 President Andreas Kosmatopoulos remains optimistic in this report to class members:

A new Olympic era has begun for the 470 class. The merging of two Olympic disciplines into one has created the exciting mixed dinghy event for 2024 and beyond. Strong and immediate competition has already provided new challenges and great opportunities for our many recently formed teams.

Olympic Games
The Tokyo Olympics were a triumph for the 470 class. The quality of the fleet was impressive. The best Olympians in history, Hannah Mills of Great Britain and Mathew Belcher of Australia, each received their third Olympic medals, with two gold and one silver. Unbelievable!

As a former doubles sailor, the footage I treasured the most were the reactions to the finish line of the last race at the Europeans, Worlds and Olympics – that latest hug with your teammate knowing the trip was now finished.

The Olympic gold and silver medals in the women’s class were won by boats built over three years ago, proving the impressive durability and quality of the Olympic 470 equipment. The juniors aged 16 and 17 years old competed in the Olympic Games in Tokyo, a lifetime opportunity realized thanks to their skills and the existence of the 470 dinghy!

We have received many messages regarding the Oscars Flag (kinetics rule), compasses (with tactical characteristics), and other concerns. We are fully aware of the need for change and the impact these decisions will have on your future preparations. We respect that time is limited and want to work with you for the best result.

According to our constitution, there is a specific procedure that we must follow in order to decide and validate any potential class change. Soon we will be announcing an Extraordinary General Assembly meeting online. If any changes are adopted, these elements will then need to be approved by World Sailing in the coming year. During this time, any changes will be public knowledge so that you can design your training accordingly.

We work hard and carefully to provide a level playing field and a fair environment for all sailors and coaches who wish to express their voice. And, as always, please work with and through your MPs as well. We look forward to your recommendations and proposals. It is truly a global effort.

With the 470 we have a powerful overall tool. The International 470 Class Association will focus on global development and support for teams in emerging countries. This includes the emphasis on equipment, training and opportunities for participation.

Our strategy is very much focused on a wider expansion of the 470 class and attracting young people to sailing. We are encouraged by the many discussions underway with our stakeholders. Together, we will strengthen our class and create new partnerships and synergies.

Editor’s Note: The problem with asking voters what they want is that the consensus does not include the voices of those leaving the class. Additionally, the loudest voices tend to be those at the top of the fleet, and their desires tend to disagree with the lower rank participants who create the basis for any enduring class.
