The Prospectors Car Club was able to support two local organizations with proceeds from this year’s 25th Steak-out Show and Shine.

Special Olympics Quesnel and the Quesnel School District each received $1,000 on Thursday, October 6.

“On an annual basis after our event, if we have enough funds generated, we like to donate to a charity in town,” said Prospectors Car Club President Cory Delves, noting their long-standing relationship with Quesnel Special Olympics.

Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, members suggested also supporting the lunch program provided by the Quesnel School District after their show and shine in August 2019.

In a note shared this month to the Board of Education, Director of Instruction Suzanne Bolin notes that their breakfast and breakfast club programs have started as usual at their schools.

Last year, the programs reached an average of 500 students per day.

“We feel fantastic to have community support for our meal programs,” Bolin said. “In schools, it’s valued every day – being able to provide nutrition to our students is really important.”

Quesnel Special Olympics program coordinator Rick Prosk also appreciated the support.

He said the group has big plans for the coming year, adding that most of their fall schedules have begun.

“We have 13 sports programs, and almost all of us hope to compete. In some cases, this involves travel to Vancouver, Terrace, Smithers or Fort St. John, so travel represents a large portion of our organization’s expenses.

The Prospectors Car Club will remain inactive for most of the winter. A new cruising season with classic and modified cars, trucks and motorcycles begins in April.
