USA Skimo is looking for race referees


PARK CITY, Utah — United States Ski-mo (skimo is the abbreviation of ski mountaineering) is looking for national referees. It will host a two-hour virtual training on November 30 at 6:00 PM MT. They will also have on-snow training at Arapahoe Basin Ski Area and Frisco, CO from December 9-11, where candidates will have the opportunity to help officiate three events:

  1. Vertical (Basin A 12/9)
  2. Sprint (Frisco Nordic Center 12/10)
  3. Individual (Pool A 12/11)

Virtual and on-snow training is required. Previous racing experience is not required. Participation is limited to five trainees. Accommodation will be covered from December 8 to 11.

Skimo was a participating event at the Lausanne 2020 Youth Olympic Games in Switzerland and is on the Olympic program for its Italian debut at the Milan Cortina 2026 Olympic Winter Games.

Of the 31 athletes named to the 2022-23 USA Skimo National Team, at least three are from Park City:

  • Adam Loomis
  • Griffon Briley
  • Ethan Romer

This season’s qualifying races include the following:

  • USA National Skimo Championships in Vail, CO
  • Wasatch PowderKeg, which was also the Junior Nationals, in Brighton, UT
  • North American Championships in Kicking Horse, British Columbia, Canada

USA Skimo sanctions and governs ski mountaineering competitions in the United States and promotes and encourages recreational ski mountaineering through access, resources, education and community. Sanctioned skimo races in the United States follow a series of rules by discipline, in accordance with the guidelines of the International Ski Mountaineering Federation (ISMF). The ISMF recognizes USA Skimo as the national sports organization in the United States.
