The most recent Olympic event could become your favorite.
The monobob, a solo bobsleigh race, will make its Olympic debut in February at the 2022 Beijing Winter Games, and the event is already generating international headlines because of its thrilling speeds and competitive format.
There are many reasons to love racing: On the seven events in addition to this Olympic cycle, it is the only one exclusively reserved for women. (The International Olympic Committee takes gender parity into account when adding new events.) Competitors reach speeds of over 70 miles per hour as they hurtle down an icy bobsleigh track. And unlike the two- and four-person bobsleigh events, the monobob requires its participants to push and steer the sled.
The competition should also prove to be convincing. Like Formula 1 car racing, traditional bobsleigh teams spend huge sums of money building custom sleds that meet IOC equipment standards. It creates an arms race for rich countries who can afford things like wind tunnel testing. Perhaps this is why only five countries have won more than one gold medal in bobsleigh since its Olympic debut in 1924.
In monobob, all the competitors must use the same sled built by sporting goods manufacturer iXent, and they are only allowed to make small modifications to it, reducing the benefit due to the equipment.
Germany has dominated the international men’s bobsleigh competition, winning the World Cup five of the last six years in the four-man bobsleigh and four of the last five years in the two-man bobsleigh. A look at the final ranking of the 2020-2021 Women’s Monobob World Series reveals a much more international distribution. Athletes from Australia, Brazil and Nigeria, nations that have not traditionally won international bobsleigh events, finished in the top ten.
Americans Elena Myers Taylor and Kaillie Humphries are two of the favorites. Both are veteran Olympians in the women’s two-man bobsleigh competition. Humphries recently obtained US citizenship after leaving the Canadian bobsleigh program. In an official complaint she alleged verbal and emotional abuse against a team coach.
Myers Taylor, meanwhile, already has three Olympic medals in the women’s two-man bobsleigh. Since the Pyeongchang Olympics in 2018, she and her husband have welcomed a son, Nico, born in 2020. Myers Taylor currently leads the International Monobob World Series.
The Boy Scouts establishment is growing
One of the insurance companies supporting the Boy Scouts of America has agreed to pay $ 800 million to a growing fund for victims of sexual abuse. Century Indemnity Co. will provide its contribution in exchange for being released from any further liability in the more than 82,000 abuse complaints against the national youth organization.
The payment brings the total settlement fund to $ 2.7 billion, which among the greatest sexual abuse regulations in US history.
The agreement marks the final chapter of the decades-old history abuse within the Boy Scouts. In 2012 a the judge ordered the publication of internal reports documenting accusations of abuse against more than 1,200 Scout leaders from 1965 onwards. Last year, the organization filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy and agreed to offer compensation to survivors and their families. A judge has set November 2020 as the deadline for individuals to join the growing number of abuse complaints, and the final number totaled 82,663.
The organization has seen its numbers drop by 62% from 2019 to 2021.
