Wisconsin extends swim coach Yuri Suguiyama through 2026-27 season

The University of Wisconsin Board of Athletics met Friday afternoon and approved contract extensions for 6 varsity head coaches, including the swimming and diving head coach. Youri Suguiyama.

Wisconsin uses a unique contract renewal method for its head coaches. Each season, the sports department makes a recommendation to the board of directors on the renewal of a coach’s contract (which maintains it for the same duration) or on its maintenance (without adding the additional year).

In this case, Suguiyama’s contract was actually extended from a 3-year track to a 5-year track: the last renewal, in April 2021, was only extended until June 14, 2024. His new contract gives him a five-year deal, which is in line with the group of more established managers who also had their contracts extended this week.

Suguiyama’s stock is rising fast at Madison: Since his last extension in April 2021, Suguiyama has qualified a swimmer for the Tokyo 2020 U.S. Olympic team. Phoebe Bacon placed 2nd at the Olympic Trials in the 200m backstroke and eventually placed 5th at the Olympics in the same event.

Bacon was the Big Ten champion in the 100 and 200 backstroke in February, and was an NCAA runner-up in the 200 backstroke.

At the Big Ten Championships, the Wisconsin men and women finished in 4th place as a team. For the men, it was a second 4th place in three seasons. The team hadn’t ranked this high since 2001.

The Wisconsin Women finished just 15 points behind Indiana, nearly breaking the top three that Ohio State, Michigan and Indiana have had, in some order, for the past five seasons.

Wisconsin also opened a new $20 million-plus aquatic center on campus, replacing what was one of the worst facilities in the Big Ten with a 50-meter pool and 1,200 spectator seats.

Suguiyama took over the program in 2018.

Public data shows Suguiyama earned $161,164.12 in total Wisconsin salary for fiscal year 2021. That was less than he earned in the previous two seasons. His initial contract called for a base salary of $150,000, a 34% increase over that of his predecessor Whitney Hite.
