World Championship will offer less quota for Paris Games, World Qualifier will have more: United World Wrestling

The 2023 World Wrestling Championship will offer five quota places for the 2024 Olympics in each of 18 weight classes instead of six as UWW announced changes to the qualifying process for the Paris Games on Wednesday.

The World Championship, which will take place in Russia from September 16 to 24, will be the first qualifying event for the Paris Games. Besides the 2023 World Championship, the 2024 Continental (Asia, Africa, America, Europe) Qualifiers and the 2024 World Olympic Qualifiers will also provide a quota for the Games.

Previously, 108 quota places were allocated at the World Championships (six per Olympic weight), but now 90 quota places will be offered.

The top six (6) highest ranked athletes in each of the 18 Olympic weight classes at the 2019 Senior World Championships earned quotas for the Tokyo Games.

However, only the top 5 wrestlers will earn quotas for their country in Russia. This means that the four medalists (gold, silver and two bronze medalists) will get the quota of their respective nations and the two losers of the bronze medal play-offs will compete for fifth place.

United World Wrestling (UWW) president Nenad Lalovic said the changes aim to create “greater equity in the distribution between World Championships and World Qualifiers”. A total of 144 wrestlers will qualify for the Paris Games via the qualifying continental events (Asian, African, Pan-American and European). The top two wrestlers in each Olympic weight category will each earn a quota place for their NOC.

Quota winners at the 2023 World Championship will not be eligible to compete in Continental Qualifiers unless they compete in a different style.

At the World Olympic Qualifiers, three quotas in each Olympic weight class instead of the two previously will be at stake.

Not only will gold and silver medalists get quota, but bronze medalists will also have a chance to earn quota.

Bronze winners will fight for the quota in each of the 18 categories.

Unused quota due to withdrawal, doping violation or non-participation will be transferred to the next best wrestler in that tournament weight class.

The deadline for entries for the Olympic Games will be July 8, 2024. The wrestling competition will take place from August 4-11.
