Zahafi named to The Bowerman watchlist

NEW ORLEANS, Louisiana – Mouad Zahafi has been named to The Bowerman Mid-Outdoor Watch List, the organization announced Thursday afternoon.

Zahafi warned the world and the NCAA athletics community this past weekend in Gainesville, Florida. Running in the 800, the Morocco native exploded significantly in the final 20o stretch with a blistering time of 1:43.69. He became the world leader and the NCAA’s all-time No. 3. Only UTEP’s Michael Saruni (1:43.25, 2018) and Donavan Brazier (1:43.55, 2016) ran faster. The brand beat tech legend Jonathan Johnson’s 2004 mark of 1:44.77 at the US Olympic Trials.

“It’s an incredible honor for Moad to debut on The Bowerman Watchlist,” the head coach said. Wes Kitley. “His run at the Tom Jones Memorial was truly remarkable and for him to lead the world and the school record is quite an accomplishment. I can’t wait to see how the rest of the season goes.”

It was the second time this outdoor season that Zahafi had taken part in a race. He opened his Texas Relays campaign with a season-opening time of 1:45.99. Zahafi is the first Red Raider since 2019, Bowerman runner-up Divine Oduduru to make the roster.

The next Bowerman Mid-Outdoor Watchlist update is scheduled for Thursday, May 6.
